Sugar Alternatives for Manufacturing Sport Supplements
When formulating a new pre-workout, BCAA or protein supplement for your brand; figuring out which sugar substitute works best for your product can be difficult. Sugar helps mask the taste of your product, but unfortunately has little to no nutritional value. Sugar contains zero proteins, vitamins, essential fats or minerals. Not only does it not pertain any positive benefits, but sugar can interfere with hormones that regulate hunger and can increase calorie intake and weight gain. Stevia is a great alternative to sugar. It’s 100% natural, found in a South American shrub, and is part of the sunflower family. Stevia is considered one of the safest alternatives to sugar and can help lower blood sugar or blood pressure levels within the body. The compounds found in Stevia are called steviol glycosides, which can provide up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar. Stevia comes in two different forms, Stevioside and Rebaudioside A, which can differ in taste. If you’re looking for an alternative sweetener; Stevia is 100% natural, contains zero calories and has shown to lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
Luo Han Guo, or Monks Fruit, is excepted by the FDA and has been used in China for hundreds of years as a natural sweetener. Monks fruit is non caloric and can be 150 to 200 times sweeter than sugar. The fruit extract includes mogrosides, which are extremely sweet. Some studies show that mogrosides contain powerful antioxidants and can help control blood sugar levels. The downside is, Monks fruit can be expensive to grow and expensive to import. Some users state Monks Fruit has an alternative “funny” taste to it and can be unpleasant to taste compared to normal sugar.
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol alternative, which contains 40% fewer calories than sugar. Xylitol is extracted from birch wood or corn and does not have any effects on blood sugar or insulin levels. When compared, Xylitol contains zero fructose, making it a much healthier alternative to sugar. Multiple health benefits include increasing the bodies absorption of calcium, it helps with bone density, and may help reduce the risk of cavities and tooth decay. The downside when using Xylitol as an alternative to sugar is that too much of it can cause stomach issues such as diarrhea, gas or bloating. It’s also important to note that Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs.
Erythritol is another sugar alcohol alternative but has even less calories compared to Xylitol (.24 calories per gram). Erythritol tastes almost exactly like sugar, but the body doesn’t have the right number of enzymes to break down Erythritol; leaving most of it to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Positive benefits include not influencing blood sugar, insulin or cholesterol levels. Studies show Erythritol can be extremely well received within the body but can show signs of minor digestive issues such as bloating when consuming higher than 1 gram per day.
